# Invasion from the Empire and Kievan Rus' (1031)

A coordinated attack by Emperor Conrad II and Yaroslav the Wise drove Mieszko II from the country and brought Bezprym to power. Within the broader Piast Monarchy period: Under Mieszko I and his successors the Piast state accepted Christianity, gained its own church province and royal crown, and fought to hold its place between the Holy Roman Empire, Bohemia and Kievan Rus'. At this point in the timeline (1031), the governing authority was Bezprym (Duke of Poland). Eldest son of Bolesław I; seized power with German and Rus' support, sent the royal insignia to the Emperor and was murdered in 1032.
