# Mieszko II submits at Merseburg (1033)

Mieszko renounced the royal title and accepted a division of Poland at Merseburg before reuniting the country shortly afterwards. Within the broader Piast Monarchy period: Under Mieszko I and his successors the Piast state accepted Christianity, gained its own church province and royal crown, and fought to hold its place between the Holy Roman Empire, Bohemia and Kievan Rus'. At this point in the timeline (1033), the governing authority was Mieszko II Lambert (King of Poland). Educated and crowned king in 1025, he faced a coalition of the Empire and Kievan Rus' and his brothers, losing the crown and much territory.
