# Battle of Chmielnik (1241)

Mongol forces defeated the Lesser Polish knights at Chmielnik and went on to burn Kraków. Within the broader Fragmentation period: After 1138 Poland split into duchies ruled by rival Piast princes. Mongol invasions, German settlement, the growth of towns and the arrival of the Teutonic Knights reshaped the land before it was reunited. At this point in the timeline (18 March 1241), the governing authority was Henry II the Pious (High Duke of Poland). Continued his father's unification project until he fell fighting the Mongols at Legnica in 1241.
