# Pacification Sejm (1736)

The Sejm confirmed Augustus III as king after Stanisław Leszczyński abdicated, ending the War of the Polish Succession in the Commonwealth. Leszczyński was compensated with the Duchy of Lorraine. Within the broader Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth period: The Commonwealth of Both Nations elected its kings and prized noble liberty and religious tolerance. It won famous victories but was weakened by wars with Sweden, Russia, the Ottomans and the Cossacks, and by political paralysis. At this point in the timeline (1736), the governing authority was Augustus III (King of Poland). Saxon elector installed by Russia and Austria; the Commonwealth was largely paralysed during his reign.
