# Załuski Library opens (1747)

Brothers Józef Andrzej and Andrzej Stanisław Załuski opened their vast collection to the public in Warsaw. It was one of the largest libraries in Europe and among the first public libraries. Within the broader Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth period: The Commonwealth of Both Nations elected its kings and prized noble liberty and religious tolerance. It won famous victories but was weakened by wars with Sweden, Russia, the Ottomans and the Cossacks, and by political paralysis. At this point in the timeline (1747), the governing authority was Augustus III (King of Poland). Saxon elector installed by Russia and Austria; the Commonwealth was largely paralysed during his reign.
