# Galician autonomy (1867)

After the reorganisation of the Habsburg Monarchy, Galicia gained broad autonomy with a Polish-dominated diet, Polish schools and universities, making it a centre of Polish culture. Within the broader Partitioned Poland period: Without a state, Poles preserved their nation through uprisings, emigration, Romantic literature, 'organic work' and modern political movements, while facing Russification and Germanisation. At this point in the timeline (1867), the governing authority was Alexander II (King of Poland (Tsar of Russia)). Reforming tsar whose regime suppressed the January Uprising and intensified Russification. Galician autonomy mattered because it altered the structure of power and the direction of Polish statehood.
