# Royal Castle reconstruction (1971)

The government approved the reconstruction of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, blown up by the Germans in 1944. Funded largely by public donations, it was completed in the 1980s. Within the broader People'S Republic period: Shifted westward and placed under communist rule, Poland rebuilt from the war but repeatedly rose against the regime, until the Solidarity movement forced a negotiated transition in 1989. At this point in the timeline (1971), the governing authority was Józef Cyrankiewicz (Chairman of the Council of State), together with Edward Gierek (First Secretary of the PZPR). Long-serving prime minister (1947–1952, 1954–1970) before becoming head of state. Royal Castle reconstruction mattered because it left a lasting monument of Poland's cultural and political history.
